Imagine sitting on a pretty, flower-strewn deck listening to the babbling stream, which runs along beside you. If you feel a little hot, just cool off in your own private plunge pool or stroll through the French windows into the cool, contemporary lounge for a drink. Imagine The River House, a delightful, detached single storey property, beautifully furnished and set beside the River Avon. Light spacious rooms welcome you while the location on a quarter of a mile of riverbank, with fishing rights (bring your own tackle) is truly perfect. For days out you can visit nearby Totnes where you will find small individual shops selling almost anything, organic food and wine, arts and crafts and exclusive clothes. Friday is market day with both a Farmers’ Market and a myriad of other stalls, you are sure to bag a bargain of some kind. From Totnes you can take the round robin trip by train, boat and bus to Dartmouth, Salcombe and Brixham, returning to Totnes to collect your car at the end.

The coves and beaches of the glorious South Hams, including Bantham, Bigbury, and Thurlestone are all within an easy drive. For evening entertainment, Dartington Hall has an ongoing programme of events and the old naval city of Plymouth has theatres, pubs and clubs to suit all tastes. Alternatively, you can sit quietly on the riverbank and observe a wide variety of wildlife. If a little more activity is preferred, all the tors and coombes of Dartmoor are on your doorstep. A leisurely stroll can be enjoyed to the Avon Dam; the footpath is tarmaced and runs along the side of a stream. For a more challenging walk head for the open moor at Princetown or Hay Tor. Pony trekking and wagon rides are available at Poundsgate and Yelverton has a well-known golf course.
