As you drive up the track to Great Rill Farm, surrounded on all sides by the glorious green rolling hills so typical of this area, you will find an enveloping sense of peace and calm. The track bends to the right and opens out to reveal Studio Cottage. This detached, single storey barn conversion with its high-raftered ceiling, huge granite fireplace, cosy sofas and country style kitchen, is flooded with light from the windows and doors, which afford fantastic country views. From the lounge, French windows open onto a small, enclosed patio, colourful with tubs and boxes of flowers. From outside the cottage, walks across the fields lead down to a river and a network of footpaths and bridleways. Nearby Bampton and Dulverton are unspoilt moorland towns with a good selection of small, family run shops, tearooms, inns and restaurants. In October ponies collected in the annual Exmoor drifts are auctioned at Bampton Pony Fair; this is an important local occasion and is cause for much celebration. Lord Tennyson called Dulverton 'the land of bubbling streams'. Water is everywhere from little streams to the river Barle, which runs through the town and is renowned for excellent salmon and trout fishing. Whatever the time of year Exmoor always has something to entice you into its gentle ruggedness.
