The coastal path, which hugs the beach at Charmouth, will take you to
Golden Cap, the highest cliff in the south. There is a car park and
information point at Stonebarrow Hill for those who do not relish a
strenuous walk. The cliffs around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are part of
England's first World Heritage Site. The Jurassic Coast is stunningly
beautiful and represents 185 million years of history in just 95 miles.
The geology is fascinating and fossil hunting is a popular pastime. The
Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre boasts displays that include a fossil
wall, a Jurassic seas mural and live cuttlefish. The centre promotes
safe and responsible collecting and organises regular guided walks.
Attractions close to Charmouth include Forde Abbey and gardens, the
Abbotsbury Swannery and Seaton Tramway. At Lyme Regis, with its
attractive harbour, motor boats can be hired, there are fishing trips
available and dolphins regularly swim in the bay.
