Known as the capital of the Forest, Lyndhurst lies among a mixture of
open heathland and dense forest so typical of this part of
Hampshire. In the woods to the west lies the famous Knightwood Oak,
which with a circumference of 22 feet and, at 600 years old, is one
of the oldest trees in the forest. To the south lie the glorious
beaches of Milford-on-Sea and Barton-on-Sea and, for boaties, the
absolute heaven of Lymington, with its international marinas and
facilities. If you are lucky and are there at regatta time, you
might even spot an elegant J Class yacht from the 1930s hey day of
yachting. Other activities in and around Lyndhurst include golf,
pony riding, fishing and walking. Rose Cottage is a charming brick
and tiled house, part of which is of 18th century origin. Standing
in its own grounds of about half an acre, it is the idyllic New
Forest holiday home. Full of character and tastefully furnished, the
spacious ground floor has a large kitchen, a lounge, which opens
into the dining room, where patio doors open onto the garden. There
are four lovely bedrooms, two with en-suite facilities; the others
have washbasins and all have a TV. The house is almost detached,
except for a completely self-contained studio apartment that is
attached at one corner and may occasionally be used by the owner.
The huge, beautifully maintained garden is the perfect place for
children to play, at the far end is a semi-wild corner just made for
hide and seek, while closer to the house are mown lawns and borders
to be enjoyed by everyone.
