West Country Cottages - Somerset Cottages
The
Milking Parlour As the name suggests this attractive, detached property, situated on the edge of Wookey, was formally a milking parlour. It has been sympathetically converted, using local materials and original features such as wooden beams and stone drinking troughs, now interesting plant holders, as well as colourful, 200 year old roof tiles from Glastonbury. The Milking Parlour has a large, gated, gravel courtyard to the front, with seating and plenty of parking space. Inside there is a spacious kitchen/diner, which opens onto the sunny patio at the side of the property, overlooking the owner's orchard and the Mendip Hills - a wonderful spot for breakfast or a barbecue. You are welcome to wander the orchard, which is bordered by a leat from the River Axe that powers the local watermill, but children must take care. The living room is light and welcoming, with full-length windows along one side, oak floors, a woodburner and attractive farming prints. In addition to the bathroom there is also a wet room - children will love splashing about and it is ideal for those less mobile. Wookey is home to Burcott Mill, Somerset's oldest working watermill, with tearooms and picnic area. England's smallest city, Wells, is only three miles away, with a lovely cathedral, individual shops and historic inns. Places of interest within easy reach include Glastonbury Tor, Longleat House, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves, Stourhead House and gardens, Bath, Street and the Somerset Levels, a nature conservation area and haven for birdlife. The Mendip Hills are excellent for walking; golf and horse riding are also available locally. The sandy beaches of Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare are within an easy drive. |
