The beautiful estuary of the River Yealm is enclosed and sheltered by oak-wooded hillsides and its banks are home to the picturesque villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. Sailing boats, dinghies, rowing boats, canoes, a passenger ferry and an amazing variety of wildlife enjoy the waterways; boats can be hired from the harbour. Crab sandwiches, cream teas and evening meals made from local produce can all be ordered at riverside pubs and there is a variety of interesting village shops. Walkers and horse riders (there are stables nearby) can explore National Trust woodland, the coastal path and riverbanks. Little Hendra is a spacious and attractive garden apartment with lovely views across the countryside of the river. Large sliding doors open onto the garden, which is slightly terraced and beautifully maintained by the owners who live above. There is a patio and level lawn with garden furniture and a table tennis table. Below this is a smaller more secluded grassed area ideal for sunbathing. From the garden, a path leads down to the harbour. The South Hams has many lovely sandy beaches backed by gently rolling countryside, interspersed with picturesque villages and historic towns, which include Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. A few miles away the cosmopolitan city of Plymouth offers excellent shops, theatres, museums and the famous Barbican and National Marine Aquarium.
