As well as having a long, sandy beach, promenade, museum, boat trips and a
nature reserve, Weymouth stands at the centre of England's first natural
World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast, which is stunningly beautiful and
represents 185 million years of history in just 95 miles. The geology is
fascinating and fossil hunting is a popular pastime. Cliff top paths, on
their way to the Isle of Purbeck to the east, provide superb views of the
great arch at Durdle Door and the almost circular Lulworth Cove. To the west
the dramatic Chesil Beach runs from the Isle of Portland to Abbotsbury,
where picture post card cottages and a thatched 15th century tithe barn are
the backdrop for the famous Swannery, home to a nesting colony of hundreds
of mute swans. The South and North Dorset Downs are steeped in history and
there are many National Trust and English Heritage houses and castles as
well as beautiful gardens open to visitors.
