The picturesque village of Cockwood lies between Starcross and Dawlish, beside the Exe Estuary. Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the estuary is internationally known as one of Europe’s most important havens for migrating birds as they journey between the Arctic and Africa. Set around the harbour the village has two pubs, including the historic Anchor Inn. Dating back 450 years, this pub was originally a smugglers haunt, now popular for its delicious local fayre and estuary views. A short walk from the harbour and pubs is Chesterfields, a large, three-storey house with a wonderful garden, situated at the end of a quiet cul-de sac. The owner lives in a small, private annexe, attached to the main house. A choice of steps or a sloping path leads up to the front door. The pretty bedrooms and bathrooms are all on the first floor; one double bedroom has a lovely en-suite dressing room and shower and the family bathroom features a Jacuzzi bath. Upstairs, the lounge and kitchen/diner both open onto the delightful garden, which has two seating areas, an ornamental fishpond and steps leading up to a two-tiered lawn. Beach and nature lovers, twitchers and rail enthusiasts will all be enthralled with this location.

The Great Western Railway, built by Brunel, passes through Starcross, where one of the old pump houses still remains. A scenic rail journey from Starcross to Newton Abbot runs along the sea wall from Dawlish Warren to Teignmouth, through five tunnels cut into the red cliffs. Hop on the passenger ferry at Starcross, over to Exmouth, and enjoy the two-mile expanse of golden sands, shops and cafés. Dawlish Warren is only two miles away and has a sandy beach, traditional seaside entertainment, golf courses and a 500-acre nature reserve. The beautiful moorland landscape of Dartmoor National Park and the cathedral city of Exeter make for two very different days out. Guests wishing to bring small boats can conveniently launch them from Cockwood or Starcross.

Bedroom 4 with bunk beds and TV. Bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, shower cubicle, WC and washbasin. Second Floor: Lounge. Kitchen/Diner. WC with washbasin.
