Set in the heart of historic Brixham, The
Captain’s Cottage is a terraced property which dates back to
the early 1800s. In and around Brixham there are several
beaches from which to choose; Breakwater Beach is just
around the harbour, this is a pebbly beach ideal for
paddling or going out to deeper water for scuba diving.
Beyond that is the free, seawater Shoalstone Swimming Pool,
which is filled by the tide every day. North of the harbour,
a path takes you to Fishcombe Cove, which is sandy and
sheltered. St. Mary’s Bay, near Sharkam Point, is a sandy
beach, safe for swimming. Berry Head Country Park, with its
Napoleonic fort, is a national nature reserve and an
absolute must for keen naturalists and bird watchers. Berry
Head has fantastic cliff top walks with vast colonies of
seabirds and stunning views and from here you can join the
South Devon Coastal Path. For an unusual outing you can catch the ferry
from Brixham harbour to Torquay where, after a relaxing
trip, you are ready for a morning's shopping in all the big
stores or, also with a nautical touch, you can go for a
three-hour sail on the Vigilance; you may be invited to take
the wheel of this 78ft sailing ketch with its elegant lines
and romantic red sails. A few miles away at Churston is an
eighteen hole golf course, a quad bike track and a small
railway station from where you can take the steam train to
Kingswear to catch the ferry over to Dartmouth. Brixham town
centre is a maze of narrow streets with a good selection of
shops, excellent restaurants where you will find the
freshest fish, straight off the trawler, and several pubs
each with their own character. |
