West Country Cottages
Older Properties

We advertise a selection of character properties, some of which may be several hundred years old. Such properties pre-date cavity wall insulation and damp-proof course and as a result may have a tendency to feel damp, particularly during the winter months. Many also feature an open fire or woodburner, which can sometimes cause the appearance of mould or damp and discolouration of walls and salt ingress. Older properties may also be more prone to condensation than modern houses and this can be exacerbated by the West Country’s climate, with very warm, moist air. This particularly affects properties with natural stone walls. Leaving one or two windows open to allow the air to circulate can help to alleviate this problem. We would normally advise against taking young babies, elderly people or anyone with a chest condition to older properties, particularly during the low season.
